Why Orthorectified?
Because orthorectified photos have been corrected for the shape of the earth and tied to surveyed ground control points the images are free from distortion and true to scale in all directions. What is Orthorectified?
A normal aerial photograph or satellite image will have varying amounts displacement caused by the irregular nature of the earth’s surface, and without being orthorectified will provide false measurements and distance. Simply placing a few points of a photograph or satellite image on known control points will not make the whole image correct - it will only be correct at those few points and everywhere else on the image will have varying levels of positional accuracy.
